NAFC Statement on Health Equity and Access for All

NAFCAt the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics (NAFC), we know that healthcare is more than a policy discussion—it’s about real people, real families, and real lives. Every year, in 1,400 clinics across the country, our dedicated workforce of over 200,000 volunteers and staff provides lifesaving care to more than 2 million patients annually—mothers, fathers, children, veterans, seniors, and hard-working individuals who simply want the opportunity to live healthier lives.

Yet despite these efforts, the need for accessible health care is growing. In 2025, the number of uninsured people in the United States is projected to reach 27 million. That means millions more people will struggle to find the care they need—whether it’s routine check-ups, life-saving medications, or critical emergency treatment.

We believe that all individuals, regardless of their age, sex, income, education, immigration status, ethnicity, color of skin, religion, or sexual orientation should have access to affordable, quality healthcare. Because when people have access to care, they don’t just survive—they thrive.

In the interest of public health and community well-being, it is imperative that every person has access to primary and emergency care—without fear of police, immigration enforcement, or legal action. No one should have to choose between seeking medical attention and protecting their safety.

Healthcare should not be determined by zip code. Those who live and work in rural communities deserve access to state-of-the-art healthcare just as those in suburban and urban areas do. Geographic location should never be a barrier to lifesaving treatment.

Women should not have to worry about what healthcare services are available to them, nor should they fear that basic medical decisions are out of their control. Every individual deserves the right to receive the care they need to lead healthy, productive lives.

As new federal policies emerge, the NAFC is closely monitoring legislative and executive actions that may impact Free and Charitable Clinics, Pharmacies, State Associations, and the communities we serve. We will continue to advocate for policies that protect affordable medication access, equitable healthcare, and the sustainability of nonprofit health organizations.

At our core, the NAFC is guided by our mission of building healthy communities for all through quality, equitable, accessible healthcare, and we remain committed to our vision of a just society that ensures a healthy life and well-being for all.

Healthcare should never be a privilege—it is a fundamental right. That is why we will continue to stand with the millions of patients, volunteers, and providers who believe in a healthier future for all.
