Today was another busy day in Washington regarding healthcare.

Late last night, the Department of Justice announced that it would side with a Texas district court’s 2018 ruling that found the Affordable Care Act unconstitutional, meaning it backs overturning the whole law. There are major concerns with this position, including the removal of protections for people with pre-existing conditions with no plan in place for them.

Today, Democrats announced a healthcare plan that would take steps to strengthen parts of the ACA. While they stated their commitment to expanding healthcare, we hope that the needs of the 27 million uninsured Americans will not be forgotten. As Americans, we need to talk about healthcare not just as a stump speech or a campaign idea. Not just when it’s convenient, or a means for political gain. We should be constantly working to improve healthcare affordability and accessibility for all in this country.

We look forward to reading the details of the bill and to continuing to advocate for our clinics and patients. As the NAFC stated at the time of the high drug pricing hearings last month: Congress has a duty to consider ALL constituents, insured and uninsured.

While both Democrats and Republicans continue to argue that theirs is the plan that will lower costs ultimately for those with insurance, the NAFC remains concerned about the Americans who continue to fall through the cracks in the system.
