Breaking Barriers: Dental Care for Patients with Special Healthcare Needs in Free Clinics Setting

For the more than 6.5 million people in the United States with special health care needs, oral health is often inaccessible. The reasons are many: an under trained workforce, a lack of adapted equipment, and prohibitive costs of treatment for uninsured and underinsured. As a result, individuals with mobility restrictions, developmental disabilities, as well as long-standing medical conditions often face long wait times, sometimes spanning years, for appointments and in many cases must rely on hospital resources and general anesthesia to receive basic dental care.
To address these barriers, the Delta Dental of Virginia Foundation is funding Centers for Inclusive Dentistry (CID) across Virginia. This program launched in 2023 provides the training and resources necessary to deliver affordable, high-quality and dignified dental treatment to persons with special health care needs directly in free clinics.
